December 2021
I only shot once this month. I was busy with the run up to Yule. Additionally, the range was shut for the entirety of January, so there was quite a long dry spell.
The so called "Turkey Shoot"
Don't worry, it's not real turkey shooting, although the tradition may have grown out of that.
I actually shot these cards on the 28th of November, but I forgot to include them in last month's page.
Basically, every November to December time, the club has an informal event where everyone shoots a specific type of target, which is then handed in. At the end of the event period, the runner lays each target over a specific picture of a turkey, and whoever got a shot closest to the turkey's eye wins a small prize.
The rules were as follows:
- 10 rounds/pellets
- 25yd range
- PL 15-18 target (ordinarily used for precision pistol shooting at 25m)
To my understanding you could use any firearm that was normally permitted by the range and the law; it was irrelevant to me since I was using an air rifle anyway. I know a few people shot with 22LR though. I didn't win.
The scans for these are not great. I had to mangle them a bit to make them fit in my scanner, and then I cropped out all the excess for filesize. These targets are huge.
Whilst I've scored them, I won't be including these in my charting data, since they're an odd case. Because of this, where I've shot more than 10 pellets I'll just divide to get a rough score. And I don't have the final, actual shoot card, since I submitted that.
I shot these with AR10 unsupported. Interestingly, the point of this shoot isn't to get a good score, but to get good coverage; the turkey's eye could be anywhere within the target, like 2 in the bottom left, or 6 just a tad above due east. So for instance, for the purposes of this shoot, of the listed cards below Warmup 4 is actually better than Warmup, even though the latter was around 30 higher in score.
| Card ID | Score | Notes | Scanned Image |
| Warmup | ~63 | 20 pellets shot, scoring 126 | SCAN |
| Warmup 2 | 69 | 10 pellets shot | SCAN |
| Warmup 3 | 42 | 10 pellets shot, 1 miss | SCAN |
| Warmup 4 | 35 | 10 pellets shot, 2 missed | SCAN |
| Warmup Final | 48 | 10 pellets, 1 miss. I ripped the target afterwards :'( | SCAN |
| Final | ~44 | 10 pellets. I missed 1. | Submitted |
It was an interesting, different way to shoot, since you're not gunning for the centre. You're instead trying to be strategic, covering as much as you can. The problem is accounting for drop; a shot aimed directly at the 1 ring at the top may drop to 2, but a shot aimed at the 1 ring at the bottom may drop to a miss. You have to think carefully before you shoot.
It was a lot of fun, especially given that it was one of the few times I've been onto the 25 yard range.
Who knew that I could get excited at shooting such short distances with an air rifle? Compared with shooting 5.56 at 100-300m you'd expect it to be somewhat boring, but it's not.
12th of December
This was the only shooting I did in December.
The whole shoot was with AR10 on the 10m range.
| Stance | Card ID | Card Type | Score | Notes | Scanned Image |
| Unsupported | Practice A | 10m AR | N/a | Unfortunately, it turned out the air cannister was improperly attached to the air rifle, which made the scoring useless. I ended up using this card testing to make sure it was working properly before I got back to scored shooting. | SCAN |
| " | Practice B Outer | " | ~52 | I put 20 pellets into this card, so I divided the scoring into two. For this one's score, I used the outer targets, an 8 from the inner target, and took the miss as it had the higher score of the two. | SCAN |
| " | Practice B Inner | " | ~55 | This one was scored from the inner target, and it got the spare 8 as it had the lower score of the two. | " |
| " | Practice C | 6 yard (shot 10m) | 56 | I shot this at 10m on smaller 6yd card for fun. The scoring zones for the targets are actually the same, but truncated to not show 3 or lower, and with black starting at 7 instead of 4.
If you were shooting a 6 yard card under sport rules, not hitting 4 or more would be a miss. However, since it's for my personal growth, I scored them as if it were a standard 10m card. |
SCAN |
| " | AR Unsupported | 10m AR | 63 | SCAN | |
| Bench-rest | AR Bench | " | 68 | SCAN |
I enjoyed shooting today, although I didn't feel like my scores were very good.
December 2021 roundup
I've decided not to do a roundup for this month, seeing as I only shot once. Instead, I'm doing a "Year in Review" for 2021 which will include the meagre data from this month in it.
